Becoming a hipster

That's right. I've done it. I've made the move into hipsterdom. I now have Instagram (@gypsyinjasper) and I'm even using filters on my photos. For shame! I know. Honestly, though, I feel kind of weird about it. I've always ripped on filters as a "photographer's" way of making a bad photo look vintage and thus, "good". Ugh. And look at me now! I've got filters all over my photos.

The thing about it is if you don't use a filter, your photo looks out of place as you scroll through Instagram. So, I find myself struggling each day as I post to the almighty Insta. Do I put a filter on or don't I? Do I bend to the desire of the masses or do I stand strong? Well, it seems these photos are proof that I have a rubber arm perfect for twisting. And, although I hate myself for it, I have to admit I enjoy seeing what my photos look like with each of the different filters. It's like a game to see what looks best.

The transformation is happening quicker than I could have ever imagined. At this rate, it won't be long before I give up my struggle and fully embrace the hipster way of life...

HELP!

  1. I have insta but I find majority of the time I don't use a filter, the most I do is use different apps to add a frame.

  6. Yesssssss come to the dark side. I'll admit it never even occurred to me to not use the filters! And, you know, being a hipster is so super cool. All the cool kids were doing it, well, you know, since forever. It's not their fault, they've just always been that way, you know? It's okay if you don't. They know.

  7. Welcome to the dark side, my dear. And by "dark side" I mean photo vignetting, because it's darker on the sides, you see. (Holy shit that joke was genius!)

I feel like the "Instagram just makes pictures shitty and it's a total fraud!" argument is overdone nowadays anyway. The only person who said that to me once and I had to throw my hands up in the air and be like "Yeah legit" was my best friend's photography teacher on facebook. But really, it's a trend, and it's not gonna go away just because someone said that filters are silly (which yes, they kind of are, but they can also set a mood and enhance a photo, just sayin').

At any rate, don't beat yourself up over it, and I for one am happy that you're on Instagram. Instagram is more for basic photo sharing and connections, not for creating legitimate art (I am absolutely anti-non-phone-photos on IG, for what it's worth). It lets me "keep up" with you, and tons of other people, on a somewhat personal and cozy but not too creepy kinda way.

  8. Welcome!! If you want to be truly hip while not using filters, you have to add the well-overdone hashtag #nofilter... ya know, so everyone knows why your unfiltered photo sticks out in their feed. Hahaha!! ;)

  13. I find myself saying "let's instragram this shit" all too often. It is like stating that something is fun enough to be instagrammed! Hooray!

  14. I have exactly the same dilemma when I upload stuff! I've only had it for about a week, but I know what you mean about unfiltered looking out of place. I seem to use one filter, but only occasionally - I kind of like my stuff looking a bit different!

  15. Welcome to the darkside! Just followed you. Look forward to seeing what you have to offer the Instaworld! It's not too bad. Only moderately addicting (said she who has taken about 820 Instagram photos in less than one year...).
